What is UI design? What is UX design?

UX design (user experience design) is the development of user experience with a product interface. In short it is the development of such interface solution that allows user to meet his needs with minimal amount of time and efforts, with minimal errors and an emotional satisfaction.

UI design (user interface design) - this is how the interface looks - colors, composition, typography - everything that makes a product beautiful and easy to use.

UX/UI design is an integrated development of a product interface.

Let's take a closer look at each point on the list:

Dealer's cabinet for b2b procurements

— Agroholding’s website with a system for distributors. In the user’s area, the interaction of the agricultural holdings with distributors is realized: tracking the sales plan, filling out applications, reviewing the assortment etc.

Why UX / UI design is necessary for business

  1. Launch a new product. When there is an idea to make a new product or service, the first step is always UX design - creating a prototype project, and then UI design - working on the visual image of the project. This allows you to fully understand how the project will look and how it will work.
  2. The project redesign process is similar to creating a new product that only takes into account the preferences and behavior of current users - it should be recognizable for regular users.
  3. Point improvement of the existing product. Sometimes there is a need to redo a section of the site or add a new functionality to the service. Such changes are designed taking into account the current structure and design of the project.
  4. When there is a new specific user group that you want to attract to use the product, but the existing interface is obviously too complicated or incomprehensible to them

UI UX design: comments on the process

The first thing to do is to separate the UX and UI design. Between them there is a clear consistency: first the UX design is developed - the result of this stage is the clickable prototype, when the prototype is tested and matched - the UI design is done.

In the process of UX design, the team participates both from the client side and from the side of the performer. Quality UX is impossible without understanding the customer's business and deep analytics, the decision-making is based on a data-driven approach - all actions are justified and taken based on the needs of users. At this stage, market analysts, users, setting business objectives and KPI project success are conducted. Then the prototype of the interface is designed and tested - a full-scale model of the future product. Work on it is completed when it unerringly fulfills the tasks of users and meets the criteria of the client's business and the possibilities of technical implementation.

The first stage of UI design is the collection of existing visual materials and customer requirements. Next, the design team is working on the design concept. When the overall view of the project is formed and approved with the client, all pages in PC and responsive resolutions, as well as all elements and their states with UI-kit for front-end developers are drawn.

We test all design solutions on real devices within the team and involving potential customers, if necessary. This helps to avoid mistakes when the project is already running and protects against double work when you need to edit or change something that has already been developed.

Participation of the design team in the project does not end with the drawing and transfer of the design to the front-end developers. Designers participate in the testing of the project before and after the launch and carry out the author's supervision.

Testing prototypes

Testing is monitoring the behavior of users when interacting with the interface. In order for testing to take place, an interactive prototype is needed, which should be as close as possible to the real product. Testing is carried out with the participation of potential users, live or remotely, with the help of special services.

Why test?

Testing of hypotheses. Confirm or deny that the user behaves exactly as the designer conceived.

Improve the prototype. Testing allows you to identify places where the user feels unsure or he makes mistakes while performing the task.

Saving money. Fix errors on the prototype is faster and cheaper than encountering them when the project is already running.

What do we test?

Navigation

Testing navigation allows you to make sure that the content is structured in such a way that the user finds the information he needs from the first time. Methods of card sorting and testing of the navigation tree are applied.

Behavior

We watch and analyze the user's actions when he performs the task. Typically, scenario usability testing and testing of the user's focus are conducted.

Perception

It allows to make sure that the prototype of the project corresponds to the mental model of the user. A 5-second test is used or two options are compared.

What doubts and objections do we hear from clients?

  • You can make a service without a UX

An interface without UX does not exist, even if the interface performs one function - it is the experience of user interaction. The task of UX is to make this interaction experience simple and convenient.

  • We don’t need to invest in UX, we already know how our product should work.

UX is the result of an in-depth analysis of all aspects of the product and the design team's work on a specific process, with testing on real users. If this work is not done - it is likelythat your product will not be as convenient as you expect.

UX is an investment that should pay off and can be predicted. Before the start of the work, a metric system is formed (for example, task execution time, number of errors, subjective convenience assessment, etc.) and each of the metrics leads to the growth of business indicators.

  • You can make a service developing its UI template theme

Such a solution is possible, but it has a number of certain limitations, and therefore is not suitable for all tasks. Among the shortcomings of the template solutions are business (lack of uniqueness, etc.), design (the template is not convenient, there are no necessary components) and development (garbage code, etc.). Building a project on a template is appropriate only if you need to collect a small functionality and test the idea on the users.
